Zubli Zainordin: Credibility, and specifically News Credibility belongs to the audience. For this purpose, TV viewers acknowledge as to whether the news credibility, presented by the station, is so or otherwise.
To me the determinant is not what the station claims, or the breaking news highlighted, but what the viewers acknowledges in terms of accuracy, fairness, and other news virtues.
From an academic standpoint, observing from outside the news premises, the news credibility of both Buletin Utama (TV3), and Berita Jam 8 (RTM 1), has been questionable by the viewing audience.
As RTM 1 is under the relevant Ministry, the station has remained the voice-piece of the ruling government. Thus, one-sided since.
The emergence of TV3, provided an alternative to RTM 1, as the news source. Although to a certain extend TV3 is pro-government, however there is room for this station to be different in news contents selection. A good example is the award-winning reporter, Karim Singh Walia, who is quite famous in exposing inefficient authorities related to the public environmental concerns.
I remember once, the STMB Chief, did mentioned that the Minister is said to be a Minister of RTM rather than Minister of Information.
So, the TV viewers has long considered RTM 1 as not credible. More tuned in to TV3 for news that provides more gratifications.
History repeats itself. What happened to RTM, happened to TV3 with the emergence of the new alternative media via the Internet.
As ratings decreases for RTM long ago, TV3 is experiencing the same since the 12th General Election.
We see within the viewing audience, several calls to boycott TV3. One of the reasons, they consider this station not credible, especially fairness in news coverage.
